Ninja weaponry
Famous ninja
Ninjatou (Ninja sword)
This is different to a standard Japanese sword, not specialised for cutting, but it had lots of different functions as a ninja tool. When the sword tip was removed from the scabbard it became a simple tube, so it could be used for breathing when underwater. The sword guard was also made sturdily, and so could be used as a foothold when climbing walls.
Kusarigama (Sickle and chain)
This weapon consisted of a sickle blade attached to a weighted chain. It could be used to attack an enemy in many different ways; the weight on the end could be swung to strike enemies from a distance, the chain could be used to strangle someone or could be wrapped around an opponent's sword, tangling them up and rendering their own attacks useless. It had the added advantage that if the chain were removed it looked like just a simple farming tool, and nobody was too suspicious of it being carried around.
Makibishi (Japanese caltrops)
These were originally made by drying out the seed-pods of 'Trapa japonica', the water chestnut plant. As they were in the shape of a triangular pyramid, there was always a spike facing up, however they were placed on the ground. Ninja scattered these makibishi over the ground when they wanted to escape, causing injury to any would-be pursuers. In fictional accounts makibishi are often made from metal but, in reality, natural materials such as the water chestnut seed-pods, wood or bamboo were used.
