Ninja disguised themselves to steal into enemy territory and perform spying duties at a time when travelling could not be undertaken freely. Representative disguises used by the ninja include: ①Priest/monk: Komusou (begging Zen priest of the Fuke sect), shukke (Buddhist priest), yamabushi (mountain priest/hermit) - the ninja would read scriptures and adopt the demeanor of one of these characters. ②Trader: The kind of travelling salesman found in every region, peddling goods on foot. ③Travelling entertainer: A sarugaku (a kind of medieval Noh farce) specialist, a street performer/comedian - the ninja would actually master their chosen art and travel around the country, performing. ④A commoner: Someone making their living off the land, such as a farmer or a warrior - the ninja would perfect a regional dialect and live according to the customs of the land. Amongst these, certain characters such as the komusou, the yamabushi, and the travelling salesman were given special government permission that allowed them to pass freely between countries, making them convenient disguises for a spy. As well as these disguises, a ninja could become an old man with some drawn-on moles and wrinkles, or they might use make-up to give themselves a sickly appearance; either of which could cause enemies to lower their guard and leave them vulnerable.
