The yuukaku (red-light/pink district) was a place that was set up to bring all the women working as prostitutes together into one area, where they were officially permitted to do business. The prostitutes there were called "yuujo" (literally 'playgirls'). The prostitutes were classed into three ranks: "tayuu" (the highest rank), "koushi" and "hashi".
