Komusou
Village life
Class system
A komusou is a monk of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism, a sect which now no longer exists.
The komusou was defined by the Tokugawa Bakufu (the Edo shogunate 1603-1867) as follows: "During takuhatsu (monk's begging) indigo blue or grey unpatterned clothing is worn with an otokoobi (a men's kimono belt) tied in front and a sack at the waist with a spare shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) inside. With a bag around the neck and a kesa (a robe worn by Buddist priests) draped over the back, the monk wears a kind of deep, dome-shaped coolie hat called a tengai. On his feet he wears 5-layed Zouri (Japanese sandals) and he holds a shakuhachi in his hand."
