A training hall/gymnasium for practising martial arts. In the Edo period, martial arts such as kenjutsu (swordfighting) and juujitsu (classical Japanese martial arts without weapons) were taught not just to samurai but also to townspeople outside the warrior ranks. Various doujo would belong to one school or another, and they'd have the school's name written on either a noticeboard outside or alongside the institution's name. Doujou were divided into two kinds - those that had the purpose of practising skills and techniques, and those that aimed at self-discipline.
