As many students attend an elementary school and junior high school in their local region, most of them either walk or ride a bicycle to school. However, when they reach high school age, some may attend a school far from their home (for example if they decide to enter a private school) so they must commute by train or by bus. At high school, it is forbidden for students to drive a car or ride a motorbike to school.
