Discipline checks are usually held at the time students arrive at school. Staff at the school gate or in the entrance hall check that the students' uniforms, bags, hairstyles and so on are in line with the school rules and aren't too slovenly. Sometimes surprise inspections are carried out in the classroom too. Skirt length, socks, belt, nails and earrings may all be checked, although how strictly differs by school. There are some schools that don't perform inspections at all. The pioneers of gaudily customising one's school uniform were the so-called "Yankii" students of the past. The Yankii-style was short jackets worn with long skirts or baggy trousers with tight cuffs, a fashion which quickly became popular amongst certain groups of students nationwide.
