Character dictionary

These are expressions used by the butler, maid or servants of an upper-class household. The character's speech is usually directed towards the family of the head of the household, so a large variety of formal polite language is used, including 「～de gozaimasu」 (is～), 「o～kudasaimase」 (please～) and 「～itashimasu」 (do～humbly). With questions, the continuative form is often used, as in 「～desu to?」 or 「o tsumori de?」 (do you intend to～?). It is characteristic for the servant to add the member of the household's title at the end of their phrases, as in 「～, go shujin.」 (～, Master/Mistress).
